Sardinia, a unique experience
Barumini - Nuraghe

Barumini

The centrally located Barumini is home to Su Nuraxi di Barumini, a nuraghe complex at the foot of the Giara di Gesturi. The nuraghe is the main type of ancient megalithic edifice found in Sardinia, developed during the Nuragic Age between 1900 and 730 BC. Archaeologists believe that the nuraghe were used as temples or conference rooms.
Su Nuraxi, dating back 3500 years, is situated along the road leading from Barumini to Tuili. In 1997 it was listed in the UNESCO World Heritage Sites. UNESCO declared Su Nuraxi the most important nuragic monument in Sardinia. Through the years Su Nuraxi has kept its excellent shape. The complex consists of a pentagonal complex surrounding the central tower made of stacked basalt rocks. In order to enter Barumini’s nuraghe, enemies had to reach a small entrance located at 7 (!) metres. You can visit the fascinating Su Nuraxi under supervision of a (English speaking) guide.
Near Barumini we also recommend visiting the Giara di Gesturi, a high and steep-sided basaltic plateau. This nature reserve is home to 500 wild, small horses.
