Su Goroppu gorge in Sardinia

Do you want to discover the unique gorge Su Gorropu - also known as Gola di Su Gorropu - during your holiday in Sardinia? Sardinia4all has already tried this excursion through the beautiful nature for you. Su Gorropu is one of Europe's deepest gorges, with steep walls up to 500 meters high and located in the middle of the rugged Supramonte mountain range. You can walk into the gorge from several places. We started from Urzulei, but if you decide to take our organized walking tour to Su Gorropu with a guide, you will start the adventure from the Supramonte of Dorgali.

Overnight in the Supramonte of Urzulei

We slept the night before at the Hotel Su Gorropu . This hotel is located just past the town of Urzulei along the SS125 Genna Silana. This 3-star accommodation - where we also had a delicious meal in the evening - is a beautiful place for travelers who want to discover the beautiful nature of Sardinia in addition to beaches. After all, you are staying in the heart of the Supramonte and there are countless hiking opportunities around the hotel. For example, it is close to the Sa Portisca nature park, but if you cross the street you can immediately start the walk to Su Gorropu. The walk from the starting point in Urzulei (right next to the red / pink colored building) seems to be slightly shorter, but due to the height differences a lot harder. We are going to experience it tomorrow!

Hike to Su Gorropu

It is September - but it can still get quite warm as the day progresses - we decide to get up early and after breakfast start our hike to the Su Gorropu gorge. Walking shoes, backpacks filled with a lot of bottles of water, a packed lunch and of course the camera. The starting point of the trail is clearly marked with a Canyon Gorropu sign. The walking distance is approximately 4 kilometers to the entrance of the gorge, but this is via a walking path with many stones and boulders and up to about 700 meters in height. So you will be on the road for a few hours.

A fantastic walking route through nature

While the clouds slowly rise from the gorge, we enjoy a beautiful route through nature. The beginning is quite simple, although sometimes you have to pay attention because of the stones. Every now and then a fast walker passes, but it is otherwise wonderfully quiet and green. Straight through the woods, with a view over the valley and here and there a shepherd's hut, we walk quietly, partly uphill. The indications are fine; wooden signs with a bright yellow text and an arrow to Su Gorropu. As the walk progresses, the view becomes more beautiful and beautiful. The forest disappears and the high walls appear. We have now been on the road for over two hours, but we have not seen anything of the gorge yet.

What a beautiful place in Sardinia

After a considerable climb, we now descend slowly. The temperature has now risen considerably, so we really appreciate some shade from the trees that reappear. More and more voices can be heard in the distance. So you would think we are almost there. There are a few more hairpin bends until we can look down through the trees. What a beautiful place in Sardinia! Left and right high walls, large rocks, a stream that fills several pools and here and there walkers who bathe. After a walk of almost three hours, we are now happy to relax, have something to eat and drink before we actually enter the Gola di Su Gorropu.

Finally into the gorge of Su Gorropu

To be able to enter the gorge you have to pay a few euros per person entrance to the employee in the white tent. You will receive some explanation, if desired a helmet and small groups are formed. There are two routes; one yellow and one green. You have to remember that the gorge fills up with water in winter. The course is therefore 100% natural. The beginning starts with huge - sometimes slippery - boulders that you have to get over while clambering and climbing. Certainly not easy at times, but if you then stand in the narrow gorge between two high steep walls .. it was well worth the effort!
