Castello

The Castello district is the oldest district in Cagliari. This medieval core, situated on a hilltop, has long been the center of power in the city. You can enter the Castello through one of the two city gates: the gate of S. Pancrazio or through the Porta dei Leoni. There are many Roman and Pisan buildings in this old town. An imposing city wall was built around the old city. You can visit several palaces and towers, such as the Torre dell ’Elefante and the Santa Maria Cathedral. From the bastion San Remy you have a beautiful view over the city, the beach and the harbor area. Also located here is the Cittadella dei Musei, which used to be an old warehouse for weapons. Today it houses the Archaeological Museum, the Museum of Ethnology, a Pinacotheque and the National Museum.

Stampace and La Marina

Seen from the Castello district, the Stampace district resembles a sea of ​​low-rise houses. The oldest part - is also the higher part - is the most interesting with narrow alleys that rise steeply towards the top of the hill. The Church of S. Anna and S. Michele characterize the area, along with the very old hospital San Giovanni di Dio. A visit to the amphitheater is very worthwhile.
Just before Via Roma is the lively harbor district of Marina. This district is characterized by narrow streets and many restaurants and trattorias. Marina used to be inhabited by fishermen and sailors.

Via Roma is a long promenade along the harbor with high arches, boutiques and old buildings from the beginning of the last century. The San Francesco da Paolo church dates from the same time. The Via Roma is also an important road connecting to surrounding towns such as Capoterra and Villasimius. Ferries from Naples and Genoa arrive daily in the opposite port. Large cruise ships also regularly sail via the old port city.

This shopping street starts from Piazza Yenne and then turns into the shopping streets Via Garibaldi, Via Alghero, Via Dante and Via Paoli. You will find many beautiful shops here with of course the major fashion brands. Most stores, with the exception of the larger department stores, are open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and in the afternoon from 5 p.m. to 8.30 p.m.

Basilica San Saturnino, Church of Sant ’Efisio and the Basilica Nostra Signora di Bonaria

The San Saturnino Basilica is one of the oldest Christian buildings in Sardinia and dates back to the year 500. The church of San't Efisio, which has a facade in the Piedmontese baroque style from 1800, houses the statue of the Saint Efisio who is transferred from the church to the further away Pula every year on May 1 behave.
Bonaria is the most important Catholic church in Sardinia. The construction of this church took several centuries. The 1st stone was laid on March 25, 1704. In 2008, Pope Benedict visited Cagliari and celebrated Holy Mass at the top of the steps.

At the foot of the historic Castello district is a beautiful garden of no less than 5 hectares with plants from the Mediterranean, Africa and America. It is the fourth largest botanical garden in Italy.
