8-day cycling holiday west and south coast of Sardinia

Cabras

Located north of Oristano, Cabras is one of the most important fishing villages, renowned for the production of the Sardinian specialty “bottarga”; pressed and salted mullet roe, served in slices on bread or grated over pastas together with olive oil and garlic. The fish swim back every year to the lagoon, the "stagno" of Cabras, to reproduce. Cabras and Santa Giusta, south of Oristano, are both known because of the crafted wicker boats, called "is fassonis". Many birds fly to Cabras each year because of the presence of both salt and fresh water, turning the area into a paradise for birdwatchers as well. The fresh water area, swamp included, stretches over 2000+ hectares.

In this region you will find extensive vineyards with the typical Oristan Vernaccia grapes. The extensive tasting of this delicious wine is a must! Taste this wine here! Also visit the Sinis peninsula, of which the entire coastal area is a protected area. Capo San Marco is the northern tip of the Gulf of Oristano and is a wonderful place for a small excursion by bike or hike. Take a refreshing dip from one of the beautiful beaches of San Giovanni di Sinis. At the lake of Santa Giusta you can see pink flamingos and other birds that live here in a paradise of their own! Around the fishing village of Cabras is produced the delicious bottarga (roe), which is used in many Sardinian dishes. Arbus

The territory of Arbus extends beyond the village; it is one of the most far-reaching in Sardinia, stretching from the Capo Frasca peninsula to Capo Pecora. The coast near Torre dei Corsari is characterized by alternating shingle and sandy beaches. Near Piscinas and Scivo lies a stretch of white dunes formed by the wind, almost resembling a desert. Near Capo Pecora the coastline transforms into shingle beaches. This coast is known as the Costa Verde, the Green Coast.
Arbus is known for the “arrasoias”, traditional handmade knives with curved blades.

Nature, Nuraghe and old mines

A stunning example of the beautiful natural reserves in this region is found near Gesturi. The high land Giara di Gesturi is made of volcanic basalt rocks overgrown with cork oaks, oaks, eucalyptus and Mediterranean vegetation. In spring the characteristic “paùli” are formed, small sinkings that fill up with rainwater, forming an impressive number of beautiful ponds covered in common water-crowfoot, functioning as a water supply for the many animals in the area. The plateau is renowned for the Cavallini della Giara, small wild horses. Su Nuraxi di Barumini, a nuraghe complex at the foot of the Giara di Gesturi, dating back 3500 years, is declared the most important nuragic monument in Sardinia by UNESCO. Via the deserted mining village Ingurtosu and high sand dunes you’ll arrive at the often somewhat wild sea of Piscinas, part of the western coastal area of Arbus, a village which is renowned for its handmade Sardinian knives used by shepherds. You can also visit the Museo del Coltello Sardo.

The village is Teulada is located in south Sardinia on the beautiful Costa del Sud, at ca. 65 kilometres from Cagliari. The dormant village itself doesn’t have much to offer, but it’s pristine landscape characterised by the versatile coastline with the Capo Malfatano does.
We recommend visiting Tueredda beach and the forest Gutturu Mannu, where you can enjoy a hike through the flagrant nature reserve filled with centuries-old cork oaks and Mediterranean vegetation. The numerous caves in the area can be visited under the supervision of a guide. We also recommend renting a boat at the beach of Porto Tramatzu to visit the secluded bay of Porte Zafferano.
