Destination Dupes Sardinia – The Best Alternatives to the Island's Most Popular Hotspots
Sardinia can feel wonderfully peaceful. But not everywhere. Especially in July and August, many of the island's famous beaches become crowded. If you're hoping to find a quiet spot in Stintino, on Brandinchi Beach or around Chia, you'll need plenty of patience—or a better plan.
Our recommendation: don't chase hidden gems. Instead, look for destinations just beyond the famous hotspots. They're not completely undiscovered, but they are far more relaxed. Not empty, but noticeably less crowded. And often even more authentic.

1. San Pietro instead of La Maddalena
La Maddalena is breathtaking—there's no doubt about that. But it's also one of Sardinia's busiest destinations in summer. A wonderful alternative awaits in the island's far southwest: San Pietro. This small island feels like a miniature version of Sardinia, with dramatic cliffs, beautiful beaches, sweeping views and unforgettable sunsets at Capo Sandalo.
Its main town, Carloforte, has a unique Ligurian heritage, plenty of character and some of the island's best seafood restaurants. It's the perfect choice for travellers looking for an authentic island escape away from the crowds.

2. The Sassari Coast instead of Alghero
Alghero is beautiful, lively and deservedly popular. But in the height of summer, its narrow streets can become very crowded in the evenings. If you prefer a wilder and quieter coastline, continue north towards the Sassari coast. Coves such as Argentiera, Porto Palmas, Cala dell'Argentiera and the coastline around Lampianu remain well away from the main tourist trail. There are fewer hotels, fewer beach bars and far fewer casual visitors. In return, you'll enjoy dramatic cliffs, wide-open scenery and a side of Sardinia that still feels wonderfully untouched.
Good to know: when the Mistral blows strongly from the northwest, the sea can become rough and swimming may not be advisable.

3. Castelsardo instead of Alghero
If you're looking for a charming town to stroll through in the evening, Alghero often comes to mind first. But Castelsardo is every bit as atmospheric. Perched high on a rocky headland above the sea, this medieval village enchants visitors with its narrow alleyways, hilltop castle and spectacular views.
The real bonus lies just outside town. Beaches such as Baia delle Mimose, San Pietro a Mare and the dunes of Valledoria are often far less crowded, even in August. They're perfect for families who would rather enjoy a relaxed beach day than spend time searching for a parking space.

4. Tresnuraghes instead of Bosa
Bosa is one of Sardinia's most beautiful small towns—colourful, photogenic and full of charm. Unsurprisingly, it's no longer a hidden gem. Just a few kilometres away lies Tresnuraghes, a quieter and more laid-back alternative.
Here you'll find family-run B&Bs, small hotels and a wonderfully authentic stretch of Sardinia's west coast. Porto Alabe isn't a glamorous beach, but that's exactly what makes it special: golden sand, open sea, unforgettable sunsets and far fewer visitors than the island's better-known seaside resorts.

5. Porto Corallo instead of Costa Rei
Costa Rei is one of the best-known beach destinations on Sardinia's southeast coast. With its white sand, crystal-clear water and endless shoreline, it's easy to see why—but in summer, you're rarely alone.
Porto Corallo may be less famous, yet that's exactly its appeal. Tucked away at the end of a quiet road, it attracts far fewer visitors. The atmosphere is relaxed, prices are often more reasonable, and it's an excellent choice for families looking for a peaceful beach holiday without the crowds.

6. Cala Sinzias instead of Villasimius
Villasimius is stunning, especially in the evening when the lively piazza and the long Via del Mare create a wonderful holiday atmosphere. In peak summer, however, the beaches can become very crowded. If you're looking for a more relaxed experience, Cala Sinzias is an excellent alternative. This wide bay offers golden sand, crystal-clear water and several beach access points, helping visitors spread out more naturally.

7. Porto Rafael in plaats van Porto Cervo
Cala Razza di Juncu beach, also called Razza di Giunco, is a snow-white beach paradise on the Costa Smeralda a>, which is framed by tall reeds. Great, shallow, crystal clear waters and perhaps the most beautiful dog beach in Sardinia. Snorkel enthusiasts will also get their money's worth in the rock paradise at the edge of the beach!

8. Isola Rossa instead of the Costa Smeralda
The Costa Smeralda is one of Europe's most famous coastlines. But if authenticity is what you're after, Isola Rossa is hard to beat. The small fishing village sits on a narrow peninsula and has never expanded beyond its natural limits. Instead of glamorous resorts, you'll find a historic red granite watchtower, a working harbour and a laid-back seaside atmosphere.

9. Golfo Aranci instead of Porto Rotondo
Porto Rotondo is often described as Porto Cervo's little sister. While the resort becomes crowded in summer and quiet for much of the rest of the year, nearby Golfo Aranci has remained authentic. Once an important railway ferry port, it is now a relaxed seaside town with beautiful sandy coves, a lovely waterfront promenade and excellent seafood restaurants serving the catch of the day.

10. Mari Ermi & Maimoni instead of Is Arutas
The famous "rice grain" beach of Is Arutas on the Sinis Peninsula is renowned for its unique quartz sand that resembles tiny grains of rice. In summer, however, the beach becomes extremely crowded. For the same breathtaking scenery with a more relaxed atmosphere, head to Maimoni or Mari Ermi. These neighbouring beaches offer the same colourful quartz sand, crystal-clear water and far fewer visitors.

Our conclusion
On Sardinia, the places just beyond the famous hotspots are often the better choice. Not because the well-known destinations are disappointing, but because the island feels more authentic once you leave the crowds behind. Travel just a little further and you'll discover quieter beaches, better value and, quite possibly, the Sardinia you were hoping to find.
