Sardinia in May, September or October: When Is the Best Time to Visit?

In May, the Mediterranean scrub bursts into bloom, the hills turn green and the mild weather invites you to explore. It’s an ideal time for a road trip around Sardinia, a journey along the Costa Verde or a hike through the countryside. The beaches are wonderfully quiet, too. You can swim on sunny days, though the sea still feels refreshing.

If swimming is high on your holiday wish list, September in Sardinia is a wonderful choice. The sea has warmed up all summer, making it perfect for long days at the beach. After the dry summer months, the island is less green than it is in spring. But there’s plenty of time to pair a swim with a trip to some of the most beautiful beaches in Sardinia.

With the first autumn rains, the Mediterranean scrub slowly comes back to life. Sardinia is usually not yet as lush and green as it is in May. The sea, however, holds on to the summer’s warmth: especially in the south, you can often swim well into October and, if the weather is right, even towards the end of the month.
