June falls exactly between the blossoming spring and Sardinia’s hot peak summer season. Pink and white oleanders brighten the roadsides, the grain in the fields slowly turns golden, and the Mediterranean scrub releases the aromatic scent of myrtle, rockrose and wild rosemary.
Along the coast, it already feels like a summer holiday. Inland, however, Sardinia is still surprisingly green. The days are long, the nights are pleasant, and even the island’s best-known places can still be explored at a relaxed pace. While Alghero is already filled with summer atmosphere, Porto Cervo remains quiet. In the Sardinian capital Cagliari and across the south of the island, summer usually arrives as early as mid-May.

A holiday in Sardinia in June is ideal if you want to swim in the warm sea while avoiding the busiest weeks of the high season. It is a wonderful time to combine a relaxing beach holiday with excursions, boat trips, water sports and snorkelling. The long June days are also perfect for a self-drive tour of Sardinia. Whether you prefer a holiday home with a pool, a small hotel or accommodation near the beach, June allows you to experience Sardinia at its lively, summery best without the peak-season crowds.

Whitsun holidays in Sardinia

Whitsun is a wonderful opportunity to bring your summer holiday forward. Depending on when the bank holidays fall, just a few additional days off may be enough for a full week by the sea. If you have more time, you can combine your Whitsun holiday with a short tour of Sardinia.

By this time of year, Sardinia has fully awakened from its winter sleep. Restaurants, beach bars and excursion operators are open, but the coastal resorts are still considerably quieter than during the main summer holidays.

Direct flights and popular accommodation can fill up quickly around Whitsun. Small hotels, places to stay near the beach and holiday homes and apartments should therefore be booked well in advance.

Sardinia usually enjoys plenty of reliable sunshine in June. Daytime temperatures often range between 25 and 30 °C. In the south and the island’s interior, it can become considerably hotter, especially during the second half of the month.
By then, Sardinia no longer feels like early summer but like the height of the summer season. Temperatures above 30 °C are certainly possible, while the nights also become increasingly warm.
Rain is very rare in Sardinia in June. If an occasional shower does develop, it is usually brief and the sunshine soon returns. Long periods of rain are highly unusual at this time of year.
The Mistral occasionally sweeps across the island, leaving the air exceptionally clear but making the sea along the northern and western coasts slightly rougher. For a relaxing beach day, it is often enough to head for a sheltered bay or Sardinia’s east coast.

Absolutely. At the beginning of the month, the sea temperature of around 21 to 22 °C still feels refreshing. By the end of June, the water temperature often rises to 23 °C or higher.

The sea warms up particularly quickly in shallow bays. Families will find excellent swimming conditions around San Teodoro, Budoni and Orosei, as well as along the Costa Rei and near Villasimius. Many of the sandy beaches in these areas slope gently into the sea.

The real luxury of visiting Sardinia in June is not just the water temperature. It is the space. There is no need to set off at dawn to find a parking space, and many beaches still offer plenty of room between the parasols.

The second half of June can already feel like high summer

If you travel during the second half of the month, you should be prepared for proper summer weather. The sun is already strong and around midday it can become too hot for long hikes or strenuous cycling tours.
A short coastal walk in the early morning is still perfectly possible. It is also worth walking to a viewpoint or a secluded bay. Longer hikes in the Supramonte or Gennargentu mountains should start very early and only be attempted with plenty of water, adequate sun protection and careful preparation.

When the temperature rises, the day belongs to the sea. This is precisely when June becomes ideal for water sports.

Building sandcastles, splashing in shallow water and enjoying one last ice cream on the piazza in the evening: June is a wonderful month for a family holiday in Sardinia.
Temperatures are already summery, but particularly during the first half of the month they are often more pleasant than in July and August. There is more space on the beaches, eating out feels more relaxed and long waits during excursions are still rare.
If the Whitsun holidays fall in June, Sardinia is an excellent choice for families wishing to enjoy the sunshine and sea before the main summer holidays begin. Apartments and holiday homes offer plenty of space and the freedom to plan each day at your own pace.
In the north, the Costa Smeralda is known for its beautiful coves framed by granite rocks. In the north-west, Alghero combines a charming Catalan-influenced old town with long sandy beaches. On the east coast, Cala Gonone and Santa Maria Navarrese are ideal starting points for boat trips to the bays of the Gulf of Orosei. In the south, the pale sandy beaches of Villasimius, the Costa Rei and Chia are perfect for family beach days. Sardinia is larger than it appears on the map. Driving from north to south takes several hours – provided a hidden cove, mountain village or small trattoria does not tempt you to stop along the way.
In June, there is every reason to give in to that temptation.
