Sardinia without a car: essential tips
Whether it is a free dog beach, bathing beach (Lido) for dog and owner or stone coast: the leash should always be with you, because not all bathers are happy with four-legged friends on the towel. In addition, you should always provide sufficient shade and fresh water for your four-legged friend! Dog poo should always be cleaned up.
Cagliari
Baia delle Mimose is a natural dune paradise between a href ="https://www.sardinia4all.co.uk/sardinia/olbia-tempio/badesi">Badesi,Valledoria and the estuary of the river Coghinas. Dogs and owners can lie free here or borrow parasols and deck chairs during the holiday season for a small fee. A freshwater shower for two and four-legged friends makes the service offering perfect.
Alghero
Alghero is one of the best places for a holiday in Sardinia without a hire car. Its long town beach begins directly beside the promenade and is easily reached on foot – ideal for relaxing days by the sea. Excursions are also easy to arrange, with buses running to attractions such as Capo Caccia and Neptune’s Grotto. The charming old town offers plenty of restaurants and bars for an enjoyable evening. Good transport connections are another advantage, including services to Sassari and along the coast to Bosa. One limitation is that many of the most beautiful beaches around Alghero are more difficult to reach without a car.
Olbia
A holiday without a hire car is also possible in and around Olbia. From the airport, buses run to several beautiful beaches, including Pittulongu, Bados and the stunning bay of Porto Istana. There are also good connections to Porto San Paolo, while a day trip to Santa Teresa Gallura can also be arranged. Trains run to Golfo Aranci, where you can enjoy beautiful walks along the coast and across Capo Figari. Olbia’s main advantage is its proximity to some of the finest beaches in north-eastern Sardinia. However, timetables can be limited, particularly outside the main season, so some advance planning is advisable.

Sardinia’s regional bus company ARST connects the island’s main towns with many smaller destinations, although departure times are not always particularly convenient for holidaymakers. The railway network mainly connects Olbia, Sassari and Cagliari. Alghero can be reached by bus or by narrow-gauge train from Sassari. When touring Sardinia without a hire car, it is best to combine several bases. Cagliari, Alghero and Olbia are particularly suitable choices and provide access to different parts of the island.
