If you are looking for empty beaches, lower prices and complete peace and quiet, the low season may suit you better. But if you love long sunny days, warm seas, lively holiday resorts and genuine Italian summer atmosphere, this is when Sardinia shows its most vibrant side.
The big advantage: in July and August, the chances of consistently good beach weather are especially high. The days are long, the sea is pleasantly warm and there is plenty happening all over the island. Restaurants, beach bars, boat rentals and excursion providers are in full swing. What may feel too busy for some is exactly what makes a Sardinian summer holiday so appealing to others.

July is ideal for anyone who wants to make the most of a day at the beach. The sea is inviting from early in the morning, and there is plenty of time until evening for sunbathing, water sports or an aperitif by the sea. The weather is usually stable and summery, the resorts are lively, and the big holiday rush around Ferragosto is still to come.
The first half of July in particular can be a good compromise: the island already has a real summer atmosphere, while it is often still a little more relaxed than in August. That does not mean the well-known beaches are quiet, though. If you want to visit Cala Brandinchi, La Pelosa, the Costa Smeralda or the bays around Villasimius, it is worth getting an early start and checking access, reservation and parking rules in advance.

In August, the Sardinian summer reaches its peak. Around 15 August, Italy celebrates Ferragosto, the country’s most important summer holiday. Many Italians travel at this time, and Sardinia is one of their favourite destinations. Families and groups of friends gather by the sea, festivals and concerts take place in the holiday resorts, and beach bars often stay lively well into the evening over aperitifs.
The advantage of these busy weeks is that virtually all seasonal services are available. Restaurants serve regional cuisine on summer terraces, beach clubs offer sun loungers, snacks and drinks, and boat trips leave the harbours every day. Sardinia is sociable, stylish and full of energy.
At the same time, the period around Ferragosto is the busiest and most sought-after time of the year. Accommodation, rental cars, ferries, popular restaurants and some beach car parks can sell out quickly. If you enjoy this atmosphere and plan well in advance, you can still have a wonderful holiday.

For a holiday in July or August, we recommend booking as early as January or February. Popular holiday homes, small boutique accommodation, family rooms and places to stay directly by the beach are often booked up early. In high summer, conditions are particularly good for a classic beach holiday. Rain is usually rare, the sea is warm and the evenings remain pleasantly summery.

Long days at the beach

An early swim, lunch in the shade and another dip in the sea in the late afternoon: in July and August, you can spend the whole day outdoors. Many beaches offer sun lounger rental, beach bars, water sports and restaurants.

Everything is open

Boat trips, diving schools, kayak and SUP rental, beach clubs and seasonal restaurants are all fully geared up for summer. Even smaller holiday resorts are lively and offer more evening entertainment than during the low season.

After sunset, promenades and village squares fill with people. Meet for an aperitif, browse small evening markets or enjoy a long dinner outdoors. For many Sardinia lovers, this atmosphere is exactly what makes high summer so special.

The disadvantages of the peak season

Higher prices

Accommodation, flights, ferries and rental cars are in much greater demand in July and especially in August. Prices are therefore generally higher than in May, June, September or October.

Busy beaches and limited parking

At popular bays, car parks may already be full by late morning. Some beaches limit the number of visitors or require advance reservations. Check the current access, reservation and parking rules shortly before your holiday.

Booking ahead is part of the experience

It is worth making reservations for particularly popular restaurants, boat trips and beach clubs. This is especially true during the weeks around Ferragosto.

High temperatures

Sightseeing and sporting activities can be tiring in the midday heat. Plan hikes, city visits and excursions for the early morning or late afternoon whenever possible, and make sure you carry plenty of water.

How to enjoy Sardinia during peak season without the stress

• Visit popular beaches early in the morning or later in the afternoon.
• Book regulated beaches, restaurants and boat trips well in advance.
• As well as the famous coves, explore longer sandy beaches where visitors have more room to spread out.
• Avoid driving every day: staying close to the beach saves time looking for parking and reduces travel time.
• Use the hottest part of the day for a siesta, a long lunch or a few relaxing hours in the shade.
• Head inland for an excursion when the coast is particularly busy.
• Split your holiday between two regions if you want to see more of the island instead of spending hours driving every day.

Which regions are best in July and August?

North-east: Olbia, San Teodoro and the Costa Smeralda

The north-east offers famous coves, crystal-clear water, excellent flight and ferry connections and a wide choice of restaurants and excursions. The region is particularly popular during peak season.
